If one has never heard of or seen a meditation box, the image of someone sitting in a box and meditating can be quite amusing or even confusing. Many questions will definitely spring forth: What kind of a box? Does it have a lid? Why would anyone want to sit in a box?! The meaning and the effect of practicing in the meditation box can only be felt through the experience, but there is also an explanation for its importance: In itself it is called “A profound teaching”, since doing the practice in one, contained place gathers and stabilizes the mind more easily. On a traditional 3 year retreats monks and nuns spend most of their time in the meditation box – they practice as well as sleep upright in the box.
At the Centre we have one meditation box for the retreatants to use, and that one and only box is becoming more and more popular among the visiting retreatants (for practice, not sleeping!). Due to this popularity, it would be great to be able to provide a meditation box in every room. We have 8 retreat rooms which would need a meditation box. Our wish is to be able to make the meditation boxes before the Winter Retreat period starts in December. Because it is always such an auspicious opportunity to support retreating in any way, there is now a chance for people to sponsor a meditation box should they wish. To sponsor materials for one box would be £100. If this is something you would like to be involved in, either by donating money towards a meditation box or helping in making them, please contact Palpung Office: firstname.lastname@example.org or 01495 313395, and we will provide the payment and other details.
